Former head coach Gary Kirsten, who led the Indian team to the T20 World Cup title in 2011, made a big statement before the upcoming T20 World Cup. He said that no one would have thought that India would have to wait after 2011 to capture the T20 World Cup title. Kirsten, who was the head coach of the Indian team from 2008 to 2011, talked about the World Cup to be hosted by America and West Indies this year.
He said that India has such players on whose strength it can win this title. Kirsten said, “Of course, India is capable of winning the T20 World Cup because it has the players who have the potential to do so. But a lot has to go right to win the World Cup, especially in knockout matches where anything is possible.”
‘T20 World Cup India capable of winning the World Cup’
India had captured the ICC Trophy in 2007, 2011 and 2013 under the leadership of the then captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Since then the team’s bag has remained empty. The Indian team also faced disappointment in the ODI World Cup played at home last year. Kirsten speaks on the declining popularity of ODI cricket
Kirsten, who scored 6798 runs in 185 ODI matches for South Africa, also mentioned the dying popularity of ODI cricket. He believes that relevance is necessary to keep 50 over cricket alive. Kirsten said, “I think there should be relevance in every ODI match. I like three or four-nation ODI tournaments, but sometimes bilateral series are irrelevant. I want to have a world champion in ODI every year. Point system or whatever method but competition is necessary.”
Will he become the head coach of the Indian team again?
Kirsten, the mentor of Gujarat Titans in IPL, did not give a direct answer about rejoining India as the head coach. He said, “I go to India every year and I love it. This will be my eighth season in the IPL and it is a lot of fun working for Gujarat Titans. It is an honor to get an offer to coach the national team.” There will be talks, but I can’t say anything right now.”
